About Smoke Ventilation
Why is Smoke Control and Ventilation Used?
To ensure that Means of Escape (MoE) routes for occupants of a building during a fire are as clear of smoke as possible.
To ensure that entry routes into a building for firefighters during a fire are as clear of smoke as possible.
To clear smoke from a building after a fire.
To protect the structure of a building from the smoke and heat of a fire.
To protect the contents of a building from the smoke and heat of a fire.
Where is Smoke Control and Ventilation Used?
Large factories, warehouses and other storage buildings.
Large shops, stores and covered markets
Covered shopping centres
Where there is an atrium in a building
Apartment buildings
Covered car parks
Theatres and places of public assembly
Prisons
What standards apply for Smoke Control and Ventilation?
Approved Document B of the UK Building Regulations: Fire Safety
British Standard 5588: Fire Precautions in the design, construction and use of buildings
British Standard 7346: Components for smoke and heat control systems
British Standard EN12101: Smoke and heat control systems
Why Vent : Notes
Reasons 1, 2 and 3 are generally mandatory as a legislation requirement.
Reasons 4 and 5 generally business reasons.
An additional benefit is that decreasing the spread of smoke in a fire reduces the risk of panic.
A sprinkler system is there to put out the fire, but does nothing to get smoke out of the building.
Where Vent : Notes
Nos 1, 2 and 3: exit point must be within 45 mteres.
No 2: If the shop is 2600 metres in size then it needs smoke ventilation.
No 5: Where travel distance is no greater than 7.5m, only an automatic opening is needed. This needs to be 1.5m
